Readers are reintroduced to Steff and Scott as the pair learn to make icy suncatchers. While following the procedure in the story readers have a chance to decode simple words ending with several different final blends such as -ld and -ct. While most of the pattern words contain short vowels, a few incorporate previously taught sounds and encourage the readers to think about the words they decode and make sure they are real words.
