Book Description
for The Future Book by Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
"This book is from the future. Lots of things are different here in the future.” Forget technology—in Barnett and Harris’s latest collaboration, a futuristic narrator leads readers on a linguistic tour of the future. “In the future, the sun is called the moon and the moon is called the sun. Morning is called night and night is called morning.” Readers shouldn’t get too comfortable, though, because while “[b]ananas are called apples,” apples don’t have a name—because they no longer exist. The book continues at a breakneck pace and eschews explanation for the changes that have taken place: “There’s an interesting reason why, but we don’t have time for that story. I have too many other things to tell you about the future.” Like instead of saying thank you, in the future “we gently place a fish on another person’s head.” The book ends with a scenario in which a character buys an apple (a banana to us) and a blorange (the future word for orange) at the bolly bolly hoo hoo (grocery store, obviously), giving readers a helpful and hilarious recap of everything they’ve learned. Ink and gouache illustrations with neon green accents and old-fashioned embossed label maker strips add to this absurdly humorous gift from the future. (Ages 4-8)
