Book Description
for The Protest by Samantha Thornhill and Shirley Ng-Benitez
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
When Lily, an African American girl, learns that the public garden she and her diverse group of friends like to play in is going to be razed to build a parking lot, the children organize a protest rally. They go through the planning steps, alert others (including the press), make posters, and come up with a chant: “No cars, no! Let our garden grow!” The rally draws a lot of people, including a reporter, and the group manages to stave off parking lot construction for another year. End matter offers tips for young kids getting involved in social action. (Ages 5-7)
