PreS-Gr 3-A sweet and loving story of a grandchild grappling with the difficulties affecting her grandfather's health and memory. Maria and Lolo (grandfather) have always drawn together, but as Lolo's health declines, so do his abilities to express himself and spend time with Maria. As Lolo grasps for the words that describe his world and his desires, Maria helps him to use the language that comes most naturally to him, the language of pictures. Oxtra's simple tale is rendered in bright watercolor, marker, pencil, and crayon colors, with Maria and Lolo's drawings coming to life as the story is told. Lolo's facial expressions are particularly touching and subtle. A glossary of Tagalog words and their context, if needed, is provided under the dedication. VERDICT A gentle read-aloud that celebrates love in change, this could be included on the SEL shelves.-Katya Schapiro
