Gr 4 Up-Greene's latest novel offers readers a character-driven, humorous tale, set in the summer of 1990. Amy (11), Beth (9), and Marion (6) are on a family road trip. Their geologist father is bringing them along to find lots and lots of rocks. Driving for days in British Columbia, strapped between two siblings, and trying to not get elbowed in the face isn't Amy's idea of fun. Especially when she is forced to listen to The Little Mermaid soundtrack on repeat. With Beth always on her Game Boy, her parents excited to learn new things, and Marion just happy to be included, Amy feels like the odd one out. Further, she's expected to set a good example. Readers experience firsthand the authentic, likable characters' personalities, and the well written plot will resonate with any reader who has been on a family road trip. Characters are cued as white. VERDICT A heartwarming story for fans of Reina Telgemeier's Sisters and other realistic fiction, this is recommended for library collections where such titles are popular.-Kira Moody
