K-Gr 3-The life of David Hockney, a living artist now in his late 1980s. The author begins with Hockney's deliberate failings in any studies but art, hoping to prove he was only good for one thing in life. His family supported his goals and, justly, his first painting sold was of his father. The book is frank about Hockney's homosexuality without being explicit. His life seems relatively without incident, his successes all but guaranteed early on. VERDICT Not for the early childhood set, this will be a staple on early elementary art shelves.
