Hildi Kang: Hello, my name is Hildi Kang.

And I'm delighted to have this chance to tell you about my name. It's an unusual combination, because I'm American, but I have a Korean last name.

You might easily guess that I got my last name from my husband, who is Korean. My name is easy to spell, just K-A-N-G.

So when you look at it, you think it should rhyme with other ANG words, like rang, or bang, but here's the catch, it isn't an English name, so it doesn't follow English rules. In the Korean language, the letter A always sounds like the ah that we have in English words, like father, or watch.

So what you should do with my name, is use that ah, and say, "Kang." Of course most people don't know this, so they say my name the way it looks, Hildi Kang. But now you have learned to say it the way I do, Hildi Kang. But don't worry, if you forget, I'll be happy to answer either way.
