Alina Chau: Hello, my name is Alina Chau. I'm originally from Hong Kong and I grow up during the British Colonial era, so when a kid grows up in a British colony, when we go to school, every kid has to have English name because that's how they work at school. They don't just address you with your Chinese name, they also, most of the time, since all the classes are taught in English, all the kids...the teacher kind of prefers all the kids to have English names so it's easier for the teacher to call out the students. My parents didn't give me the name Alina, they actually just give me a Chinese name but when I'm old enough to go to school, I need to have an English name for classes so when I'm old enough my mom just say, you can pick a name because she think it'd be more fun for me to choose a name. My first choice is actually, is not Alina, is called Viennetta, it's actually one of my favorite ice creams growing up, it's ice cream cake, it's very delicious. But my mom, for obvious reason, she read how I name myself after an ice cream so she said okay, you have to pick a different name, is has to be something sensible, short enough and clear enough for both her and the teacher to pronounce.
So, I just go for the dictionary and start with the alphabet A, so go for A. I like Athena because at the time I'm into Greek mythology but I don't want to be a goddess, so I just go for the dictionary and find another name kind of similar enough and sensible enough for my parents and my teacher to address me. So I end up picking Alina, that's the story.
