Jules Ober: My name is Jules Ober. I was christened Julie Harper. During my teens, friends started calling me Jules and I much preferred that to Julie, so it stuck. But then when I moved from Australia to France, things got tricky. Jules is most definitely a boy's name in France. They pronounce it "JULE". Mon jules is even old fashioned slang for my boyfriend. I took my French husband's name, Ober, when we were married 30 years ago. When French reviewers talk about the books Pierre-Jacques and I make together, they've been known to say things like, "A beautiful book by the Ober brothers." Hmm. I wonder whether I should go back to Julie, but it's hard to turn back with a name, especially professionally. Oh, well, I think I will just enjoy the ambiguity of Jules.
