Suharu Ogawa: Hi, my name is Suharu Ogawa. It's a Japanese name and we pronounce R as somewhere between L and D. So it's SU-HA-RLU. But you can also call me SU-HA-RRU, with an R too.

My father named me after Subaru, or the Pleiades, which is an open star cluster in the constellation of Taurus. He was inspired by a Japanese writer, Sei Shōnagon, and her 11th century book, The Pillow Book, where she praised Subaru to be one of the most beautiful stars. It's a visible star cluster in the winter, and ever since I was a little kid, I enjoy looking up at the sky to find it every winter.

It's an unusual first name in Japan, but I love it.
People think I was born in winter, but I was born in summer. My last name, Ogawa, means small river, and I do love swimming.
