Jane Springer: Hi, my name is Jane Springer. I just want to remind all young women out there how important it is to make your own decisions about your name. I got married a long time ago when I was only 21. In those days, most women changed their surnames to match their husbands. I hadn't yet heard that some women were protesting and keeping their own names, so I changed mine and soon regretted it, because I realized I'd lost a really important part of myself. I didn't at all like signing that new name, or getting a degree in that new name, or worst of all, not meeting up with old friends who tried to get in touch with me but couldn't because they didn't know my new name. So I went back to the old one, and I won't change it again.
