My parents who lived in Pennsylvania were contacted by a couple in California who happened to see the birth announcement for my older sister, Susan. The couple had just had their own daughter also named Susan Slater. They thought it was a great coincidence but figured we weren't related, because their parents had changed their name to Slater. Turns out their side made the same changes ours did, both to Slater without knowing it, so they discovered that they were related after all, and our families remain friends to this day 50 years later.
