III Joseph Marshall: Hello, my name is Joseph Marshall the third, and I'm the third male obviously in my family on my paternal side to have the name. The first Joseph Marshall was a great-grandfather who happened to be a Frenchman. People who hear the name say it's English, and they're right, but my great-grandfather was a Frenchman on my father's side. His name was pronounced Mareschault, and probably spelled a couple of ways, but when he and his bride were married way back in 1880-something or before, they were married by an Anglican priest who was from England. And when he wrote out the marriage certificate, he changed M-A-R-E-S-C-H-A-U-L-T, Mareschault, to Marshall, M-A-R-S-H-A-L-L. So that's why we're Marshall.
It's an easy name to remember, but on the other side, on my maternal side, I have a Lakota name, and that is Ohitia Okiye. Ohitia Okiye means "we have heard of his courage," and that name goes back a long way in my family. It was earned by a great-great-grandfather, and that name has been passed down since then. So, I have those two names, Joseph Marshall the third and Ohitia Okiye.
