Dave Eggers: Hi, my name is Dave Eggers. My last name is Eggers, which comes from Austria. Rumor has it, it means plow man, so it's related to Schwarzenegger, too. In German, it translates a little bit to black plow man. It's not the most popular name even in Germany or Austria, but a lot of the Eggers settled in the Midwest way back when. But as you can imagine, as a kid it's not easy to have a name that is a food basically or evokes a smelly food that most kids don't like, and so I got every derivation of that. I was nicknamed egg head, egg beater, ham and eggs, and then some other forms of it that I can't mention in polite company.
