Van Hoang: Hi, my name is Van Hoang. Van is pronounced like minivan, which was very confusing for me growing up. The first time I heard my name pronounced in English when I was six years old, I couldn't stop laughing because it sounded so strange to me. In Vietnamese, it's pronounced VUN, which is kind of like the word fun but with a V, and it means cloud. In Vietnamese, my last name is pronounced HOANG, which means king or royalty. I used to hate my name because people would look at me funny, like they weren't sure they'd heard it right. I learned that, even though it's different, it's part of me, and the struggle that comes with introducing myself and explaining what my name means has helped me understand who I am.
