Ellen Levine: Hello, my name is Ellen Levine.

That's not my original family name. When my grandfather came to America, he had a long Russian name, Noholmotsky. And the immigration officers at Ellis Island couldn't pronounce or spell it. They were giving out the names Levine and Cohen to Jews, and we got Levine. So although Levine is a common name, I have no Levine relatives.

Sometimes, people call me Ellen Le-vine, which is not how I pronounce it. But a friend said, "Well, at least it rhymes with divine."

So I say, "Feel free to call me divine Levine, anytime."
