Fredrick McKissack: Hello. My name is Fredrick McKissack. I was born in Nashville, Tennessee. My father's name was Lewis Winter McKissack. McKissack is a Scot-Irish way of pronouncing Isaac. It came from Germany, and they went to Scotland, and that's the ... They became, instead of Isaac, it became McKissack. I was named, at first, Fredrick for Frederick Douglass, so my name would have been Fredrick Douglass McKissack, but on second thought, since I was born in the South, Frederick Douglass's name was associated with the Union North and the Civil War, so they named me Fredrick Lemuel McKissack, and Lemuel means peaceful, so that's that.
