1. And here is the final cover! you can buy this edition of Northern lights from SCHOLASTIC UK. or do a search using the ISBN number- 140719870X

  2. Here is the B&W rough of the design that was chosen from the 4 in the previous post. Here i was trying to figure out the weight of details and lines for the cover.

I then took this drawing and popped it into Photoshop and played with the colour and figuring out which areas were going to be gold foiling and which were going to be silver foiling. A lot of bling!

  3. Well last nights first episode of ‘His dark materials’ On the BBC was awesome! I watched it with my husband who hasn’t read the books and he said that he felt it was an introduction episode, and we both agreed that we felt it was going to escalate and each episode would get better and better and more involved. Ive been worried that it wouldn’t live up to the books, and nothing can but this adaptation is the closest yet and I’m so happy they’re really drilling down into the darkness of the magisterium.

I thoughts i’d share with you all my development sketches for my cover for ‘Northern lights’ the first book in the HDM trilogy. This edition is now available to buy and is published with Scholastic UK.

The bottom left is the design i used for the final cover. As you can see the armoured bear was featured in all my designs, because he’s such a visually poignant character and captures the mood and setting of this book. He’s also one of my favourites from the whole trilogy.

  6. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeep!! I can’t finally reveal to you guys one of the most exciting projects!
This was a total dream come true as they are my favourite books when I was a teenager and still are! I’ve had the total unbelievable privilege to illustrate the new covers for @philippullmanofficial His dark materials trilogy!! This is the first book ‘Northern lights’ or in the US it was renamed The golden compass.
With the excitement that is building in me for the new BBC drama coming at the beginning on November I’m still agog that I’ve done these covers. I know that the fan base for these books is epic so I hope they are well received and I’ve done it justice.
I must say a huge Thankyou to my agent Helen @inklingpress @pickledinkfor being by my side and being all around BOSS and to @scholastic_uk for thinking of me for these reissues and doing such a super job with all the foiling! This is a paper back edition but it has pull out flaps as you can see if you scroll along in my pictures.
The other two books will be out in a month, but to by this first one the ISBN number is 978-1407198705 if you pop that into google it will come up with shops that are selling this edition.

  12. My 2nd Authored picure book and first wordless book is now out in the UK & US!!

Ive always wanted to really dive into a wordless narrative and luxuriate in the intricacies of telling a story without words. Thanks to my wonderful editor Paula Wisman and my amazing art director Lizzy Bromley at Simon & Schuster, they gave me that opportunity.

‘The balcony’ idea came about when i was in Berlin visiting my supremely talented friend deborah Livadna http://devorahlivadna.com who i dedicated this books to! go check out her illustration site its amazing!

When i was in Berlin i was noticing all these apartment blocks, some old some new, some with balconies some without and some with cascading plants and flowers- so i built a story around the idea of growing your own slice of paradise in an urban sprawl and how that might affect the people who live above, below and around you.
