Yohuru Williams: My name is Yohuru Williams. My name, Yohuru, is a derivative of the Swahili word for freedom, Uhuru. It's spelled differently, U-H-U-R-U.

My parents gave me that name because they were '60s radicals, very much influenced by the civil rights and Black power movements. But they really wanted a name that symbolized what they'd hoped my life would embody, the struggle for freedom up until that point, and if I would be able to enjoy the fruits of liberty, freedom, equality that others had fought for.

So, I love my name for that reason, although it gets butchered all the time. I get called everything in the book. But it's pronounced Yu-hu-ru.
